Thanks to NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory, we can now see incredibly detailed views of the suns surface. We are able to witness solar flares, CMEs, coronal rain like never before. This is a series of videos - timelapses created from thousands of images taken by SDO and compiled into stunning video. The SDO captures an image of the sun every 12 seconds in various wavelengths. These video are created from thousands of those images. Space is unbelievably strange. You would be forgiven for thinking that every planet out there is similar, just a big ball of rock and gas, but planets are remarkably more unique than that. Here's the top 10 strangest planets in the known universe, that seem like they belong in some bizarre science fiction series. Courtesy: NASA/SDO/GOES An unusual solar flare observed by a NASA space observatory on Tuesday could cause some disruptions to satellite communications and power on Earth over the next day or so, officials said. The potent blast from the Sun unleashed a firestorm of radiation on a level not witnessed since 2006, and will likely lead to moderate geomagnetic storm activity by Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service.
In the bottom of a garden in Buckinghamshire, something out of this world has been happening thanks to one determined pensioner. Dave Tyler has created a high-tech observatory so he can do some serious star gazing. And as Leyla Hayes reports, he's managed to take some incredible pictures of the skies at night.
1.Radiation from the eruption set to hit earth within hours, creating a 'moderate geomagnetic storm' 2.Incredible phenomenon could give new insight into how solar eruptions affect electricity supplied on earth Nasa today released stunning video showing a 500,000 mile long 'solar whip' on the surface of the sun - and the beautiful aurora it created on earth. Captured by from NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO), the images show in unprecedented detail a very long, whip-like solar filament extending over half a million miles in a long arc above the sun's surface. The coronal mass ejection, or CME, traveled at over 900 miles per second. The CME did not travel directly toward Earth, but did connect with Earth's magnetic environment, or magnetosphere, with a glancing blow, causing aurora t...
